As I mentioned in an earlier post, we do most of our shopping at Walmart Supercenters which is a bit ironic because we rarely shop there at home. But with the last trip and now with this one Walmart offers everything we need. They are generally easy to find, we can stay over night if need be and they have everything at fairly good prices - although a bit limited on selection. We did stop at a Safeway in Sacramento because we desperately needed food and were shocked at the prices.
That being said, we do shop at the local store when we are camped and too far from a Walmart. The other day we made a trip into El Centro because Derek had found out about a good store from a couple at the hotspring. Actually they told him it had great baked goods - dangerous words to Derek. Mention good bakery to him and he is there. It wasn’t too much trouble to find the shop Cardenas but it turned out to be a large grocery store. It was really nicely outfitted inside with a huge selection. But we went on Saturday and it was very busy. Definitely geared to the Spanish population which is perfect for us. We were overwhelmed by the bakery goods and didn’t know what most of them were but we made our selections and a few others such as really really great tortilla chips made in house. We also got boilles - Spanish buns right out of the oven.hmmmm
When in Holtville we shop at their local store, Del Sol. The other day we stopped in for milk and I got a serious case of de ja vu. Del Sol hasn’t changed a bit since we were here in 2008 and so it felt comforting being back to this store - also quite Spanish. For a little shop it has all we need and at fairly good prices. We love just looking around at all the unique products. Now if we could just get to a Trader Joe's....
Other then produce almost all groceries are less expensive in the States. Dairy is at least 1/3 cheaper and items like chicken and steak are about 1/2 the price. We eat almost exclusively Mexican food. I will post more on that in a later post.
